The man holding the ring took a cigarette pack from his shirt pocket, shook two cigarettes up, and offered one. The other man took it. The ring went into the shirt pocket with the pack on top.
The two men talked and puffed a while.
"Well, it's late. I'm going to close up and go home."
"Yea, I better get going too," then he muttered, "What have I done? I gotta go." The van started and moved away quickly.
The ring came out of the pocket. The man held it under warm running water, and scrubbed it with a toothbrush.
